Maria Full of Grace rating - Excellent ***** Two girls from the countryside in Columbia get drawn into the drug trafficing trade. One thing I liked about it was that the story takes you all the way from the mountain villages of Columbia to New York City. It's interesting to see how the US seems like a foreign and intimadating place as you see through the eyes of the young women. It accurately shows the reality of the drug trade. Gritty, Real, and Sensative at the same time. |

Y Tu Mama Tambien - rating - Excellent ***** This movie is hot and edgy, entertaining, funny, and serious. Two Spanish teens go for a vacation in Mexico. They run off with an older firey woman to the seaside and end up romantically involved. This hurts the two boy's friendship deeply, but they learn about life from the experience. The film is set in the joyful and sunny atmosphere of rural Mexico. The story is strong.
Osama - rating - Good **** |

Memoirs of a Geisha - rating - Excellent***** Everything was great in this movie, however it would have been more acurate to see it with the charactors speaking Japanese. It felt a little strange seeing everything in the film done with exquisit acuracy of the times, then hearing english from their lips. Le Placard (The Closet) - rating - Hilarious ***** with Gerard Depardieu Daniel Auteuil plays François Pignon who works in a condom factory. A neighbor convinces him to convice the company he is gay so he can avoid being fired. This sets off a whole series of events that change the main charactors boring life. The movie is full of funny moments, but not overdone. It moves along and holds interest. It is good and entertaining.
Crimson Gold - rating - Good **** This is a dark and subtle film by Jafar Panahi. It has a slow pace but is interesting if your in the mood. It shows the life of a pizza delivery guy in Tehran who is involved in petty crime as well. I found It a great way to see one Iranian's view on urban life in Tehran and the director's views on the strict islamic policing which occupies a quiet side role in the film. It's nice to see life in Iran from Iranian point of view instead our western politicians. Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring - rating
- Excellent ***** Director Kim Ki-Duk
Valentin - rating - Ok*** A little boy deals with his father's new young girlfriend, becomes her friend and then feels betrayed later on. It is a story about friendship in urban Argentina. The Holy Land - rating: excellent***** A look at the life of a young man in contemporary Israel, he ventures out making friends with arabs and foreigners unbeknownst to his orthadox parents. He falls in love with a Russian whore who is among his new found friends. The end is shocking and unexpected.
Travellers and Magicians - rating: good**** This film reveals the value of home culture in a rural mountain village in Bhutan against the foreign influence of America. A man leaves his respected job to become a migrant worker in America and life turns a different route than expected.
City of God - rating: excellent***** Follow the lives of a few young men and woman who must live in one of
the worst urban neighborhoods on earth. This story is the most shockingly
violent film I've seen. Kolya - rating - rating: very good***** This is the second time Ive seen this movie. It has alot of interesting details and is well done. The story is interesting and takes place in 1989 during the fall of communism.
Kandahar - rating: ok*** It goes along well, showing the starkness of the land and people. the story is interesting, but the end is unsatisfying, therefore making it an "ok" rating. Little Otik rating: strange but ok*** This is a story taking place in the modern day, but telling an old czech folk tale. It is an odd movie, at first believable, then unbelievable, but evenually changing into a kind of horror movie. The stop-motion stick baby is freaky.
Inspiracion - rating: good chick movie**** This is a comical fun movie about young love in the upper middle class of Mexico City. Barbara Mori plays a hot Alejandra, persued by the innocent and goofy Gabriel. This film portrays the dating quite fun and innocently.
Broken Wings - rating: Ok*** This film captured the hardship of a working-class family in Israel. The mother a midwife who works nights is left to care for four kids after the father dies. The family struggles emotionally to survive in the setting of the city of Haifa(I think that is the city). It is very contemporary and believable.
Emir Kusturica - Director A charming movie taking place in the 50's in Sarajevo. It poked fun at communists, and told a family story from a boy's perspective. Worth seeing.
Everything is Illuminated - rating: Hilarious**** An American Jew retraces his roots in Ukraine and encounters a funny cultural clash. The first half of the film is funny. The second half is much more serious. The full story remains hidden till the end.
Dog Days - rating: Eh ** This movie shows a bunch of wierd people in the suburbs of Austria. It is a a strange movie, which could be ok, except there is no clear climax and story for all the characters that you follow throughout the film. It was edgy, but in the second half got bad. So this gets a bad 2 stars.
Seven Years in Tibet - rating - Good**** Great landscapes, great musical score, director Jean-Jacques Annaud really painted a great picture with the resources he had. This film was not as deep or genuine as "Kundun" but it is easier for the public to handle.
Spy Game - rating - excellent***** This film was exciting, realistic, and written very well. No cheesy Hollywood dialogue here. The locations were great and charactors strong. It's a fun and intelligent film.
Der Untergang - The Downfall - rating: Excellent***** A portrayal of the last days of the Nazi's... as told by the Germans, in German, by German actors. This movie will make you think and broaden your point of view. It makes the long history of cheesy, over-dramatic American WW2 movies seem quite two-dimensional. Starring Bruno Ganz.

Munich - rating: Good**** A very realistic view on isreali hitmen in the 1970's after the Munich terrorism event. This is a look at real life spy activity in that period. Les Destinees - rating - Ok *** This film explores the life of a factory owner in France before World War 2. The main man is obsessed with his porcelin plate factory and this causes issues in his family life. It is a classical atmosphere full of formalities and the stuffy life of the rich at the time. There is little edge in the movie. It effectively shows the life of the rich in France at the time. That is it's main credit. It is long and moves slowly.
Loves of a Blonde - rating - Ok *** This film seems only half finished. But I give them credit because it was made during communism when film budgets were not the top priority. The part which was completed was a good look into the life and culture of 1960's eastern europe. A culture and time which now only exists in the minds of middle aged people there. The dating scene and methods seem funny compared to now, and the stubborn family near the end is stereotypical and amusing. Satin Rouge - rating - Good *** This Tunisian film follows the life of a middle-aged single mom who discovers the joy of belly-dancing. It is a beautiful transition from mid-life bordem to finding one's fire again. This film is believable and real. A Taste of Others - rating - Ok *** Two guys work as bodygaurds of a unrefined factory owner. They have some
love discussions and a relation with a waitress.. etc. etc. The Factor
Owner falls for an artistic English teacher, it's funny at times seeing
his clumsyness. In the end, the unlikely happens. The Last Metro - rating - Ok*** Heinz Bennent, Gerard Depardieu, Catherine Deneuve A Jewish owner of a theater hides in a basement during nazi occcupation of Paris. His wife (Catherine Deneuve) runs it while the world believes he has left France. It is full of moments of tension as Nazi authorities almost discover the secret, and the movie shows the theater scene. It wasn't really gritty, it seemed to have a little hollywood style fakeness to it, but it was entertaining. The tension of the situation keeps you hanging on at the same time it does move slowly an odd combination. Cerberus - rating - U rate it for me! This Sci Fi Channel Film was shot in Romania and follows the adventures of an american tough guy team who battle a three headed dog from hell, while also fighting the chinese mob - all set in a small town and caves of Romania. This film is full of cheesy lines! The Skeptic - rating - U rate it You should see it cause it's shot in Saratoga. It has a lame plot, but it cost millions of dollars! So hey, at least you can enjoy the sets (I just happened to work in the art department on this one). No bias here! Taste of Cherry - rating - good**** Abbas Kiarostami Director. Starring Homayoun Ershadi. My Summer of Love - rating - good**** (chick flick) Pawel Palikowski - director Two girls from opposite economic backgrounds spend the summer together, getting into trouble together in a small contemporary english town. This is a chick flick with many topics that girls can relate to from their teenage years. Mediterraneo - rating - Ok*** Italian sailers are abandoned on a small greek island during WW2. The movie is full of funny little stories of the soldiers. It is a very human movie about the common man told with an interesting italian perspective. Lila Says - rating: good**** A young man from a muslim neighborhood in France falls in love with a french girl and this creates problems with the young man's buddies. The film is seductive and blue collar. It shows a multi-dimensional side of European muslim life that exists. It is good. Don Juan - rating: waste of cellulose* with Penelope Cruz, Emmanuel Beart. This movie sucked, don't rent it. Boring, no direction, not exciting in any way, and no solid set of events. I think penelope cruz quit her job after the first part of the movie.
The Motorcycle Diaries - rating: good**** Che Guevara - his life before he was famous, the movie follows his early experiences travelling across South America. The story moves quickly and has a modern production feel with full budget lighting and detail. Advertising Rules - rating: ok*** This is a silly movie where a young man finds himself fighting the old stodgy system of the elders in Berlin within the advertising industry. It is funny, reminiscent of a Hollywood style comedy. Bandits - rating: ok*** Starring Katja Rimann, Jasmin Tabatabai, Nicolette Krebitz Russian Ark - rating: ok*** Very different style of movie. follow a man through time in St. Petersburg. Learn alot of russian history, get the feel of the 18th century. this should be a good movie. I wished for more of a 'people' story in it, but that wasn't the point of this type of movie. The point is to focus on history, understand the marble-floored lives of the tsars, parties, obsession with art, and Russian cultural self-focus.
#32 The Blond - La Bionda - rating: good **** This was an enjoyable film of an unusual situation where a common watch repairman living in modern Milan finds himself involved with a woman (Nastassia Kinski) he accidentally hits with his car. She has memory loss, but finally returns to her old life in organized crime. The common man played by Sergio Rubini is accidently sucked up into a complicated situation. The movie has a typical italian flavor, with dramatic music and a slightly aged look(despite the film being from the 90's)
This film had a complete story, with suspense, and strong characters. Roberto (Jorge Perugorria) goes looking for his long lost mother after returning from the US which is father brought him to when he was a child. The problem with this movie is it is tooooo slow. if they removed all the silences between lines, it would be better. Second, the movie soundtrack is aweful and synthetic sounding and is used throughout the movie even when it is inappropriately matched to the visuals. Too much music, too poor of a quality.
Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift - rating: Good**** This was a fun movie, not too harsh or deep. I learned a little about modern Japan through the movie. Amazing cars, hot chicks, some story... It is entertaining for men and woman.
